HDD in 1050
HDD in 1050

Hi,
My plan is to install a 2.5" HDD inside the case of the 1050 drive. I want to feed both the 1050 and the HDD from the PSU of the 1050. Can it produce enough power? Will it be the first combo drive?

Hm, maybe you´re the first one who build this combination; I´ve never seen something like this until yet.

When the PSU is strong enough to drive a modified XF-drive with a 5 1/4" and a 3 1/2" diskdrive inside I think it would be also strong enough for a small HDD.
The only difference could be that the HDD runs all the time, the diskdrive only needs power when you read/write on a disk.
How much amperé needs the HDD?
Greetings from cologne, Sleepy

Don't really know the power consumption of the HDD. It is a regular notebook hdd from the peecee world.

hmm, I´d like to invite you to use a CF-card if you want to use atari power supply.
It needs much lower power, than any hd - no matter if it´s a ´notebook´ or ´desktop´hd.
A hd uses up to 100 Watts, that´s not good for the ps of ATARI.
A CF can easily be connected to ide via CF2IDE-adaptor.

Hi, the 2.5" HDDs don`t need much, about 0.5Amps at 5Volts, that makes 2.5Watt! (100W?? Was soll das für eine 2.5" Platte sein??)
It should be working with the 1050 Powersupply, but not with the Original Regulator 7805 in the 1050! You should use a LM2576 StepDown Switching Regulator for the whole 5V (HDD+1050) !
I am selling such a Regulator-PCB for the 1050....
Reg.,
Wolfram.

Hi Wolfram,
Good to hear from you again. (I'm the one who bought your TT last Christmas

. Serving me well since)
Thank you for your reply. 100W seemed a little bit too much to me too. There is not a battery pack that can provide that much power. How complicated is to replace the regulator? (I don't even know how it looks like

) And what is the price of it? You can contact me personally.
Thank you in advance,
Jozsi

It's not exactly the same, but I built a XF551 PCB into a 1050 case, together with a flat 40 tracks DS 5,25 inch mechanic and an 80 tracks DS 3,5 inch one from an Atari ST. No problems when using the standard 1050 adapter, but OTOH I can't acces both drives at the same time as the use the same controller...

Hello to Budapest!
Adding a notebook HDD is a no frills job for the power supply of the 1050.
Alternatively to changing the power regulators in your 1050 you could as well use an external 12V/5V= power supply.
Have a look here for additional info

Regards and a happy new 2006
