Neues QMEG?
Neues QMEG?
von Bunsen » Sa 26. Jun 2010, 14:49
Das alternative Betriebssystem von Stefan Dorndorf wird gerade in Polen aufgebohrt. Die Weiterentwicklungen hören sich interessant an...
Stefan, was sagst du denn dazu? Wird es eine neue authorisierte QMEG-Version geben?

Hallo zusammen,

Hi Pawel,
first of all: congratulations for successful disassembly of QMEG-OS. It's not easy to understand, especially the ramdisk driver and the reset routine.
But your changes seem to go in a direction, QMEG-OS wasn't written for. The philosophy of QMEG-OS is to have utilities usable with no or widely used extra hardware in the ROM - but only if it can't be put elsewhere. Thus highspeed routines and extra RAM support is included. Highspeed routines are best in the OS-ROM since you always need them. The QMEG ramdisks are not a must, but the disk copier and the freezer use them, so they are there. And of course the software freezer can't be located on a file.
Test utilities for the ATARI custom chips need not to be in an OS-ROM: There are seldom used and you can insert a diagnostic cartridge with test utilities instead. (Highspeed routines can't be located in a cartridge, since disk sectors can be read in the RAM area overlapped by the cartridge ROM and thus the cartridge must not be active when the highspeed routines are used.)
Support for the 65c816 and so on is very special hardware seldom used by ATARI users. Almost everyone has a memory expansion and/or highspeed capable drives resp. SIO2XX devices but not such special hardware. The support for SIO2SD may be useful, since it is a widely used device, but there are two other widely used SIO2XX-devices: SIO2USB and SDrive. And the SIO2SD has a built in configuration menu (F4 to start it I remember?), so you don't need one in the OS-ROM. And you can load a menu from SIO2SD if you press Shift while making a coldstart. Thus I think it's better to put the configuration in this menu. For example I wrote YASH for SIO2USB, a very comfortable file manager for SIO2USB. I won't locate it in the OS-ROM since you can easily load it with QMEG's fileloader (or the SIO2USB keys) from the SIO2USB device (from an USB stick or the built in 512MB card).
Thus I think your version is a fork based on QMEG 4.04, you should not call it 5.0 - I hope you can follow my argumentation.
Some words on MLM: It is in QMEG, since it is not possible to load it from disk (it would occupy 2KB RAM). Nowadays it is not so important, since there exist the Turbo Freezer, which allows to examine and change the hardware registers. But there are only around 200 Turbo Freezers worldwide, so I want to keep MLM in QMEG. OK, you can use an emulator with builtin monitor - but not if you develop software for custom hardware. I use MLM a lot!
Maybe I make some minor changes in QMEG in the future: better highspeed routine (hindex), setting the bootdrive via keyboard IRQ (or in the freezer). I will remove the EDI and G25 setting and maybe the CAS-Simulator - I haven't used these features the last years. But I will keep the Printer handler: it may be used to send the print output of an ATARI program to your PC via an SIO2PC cable (APE,Last Word?). Even MLM can send its output to a printer.
With kind regards
Stefan (aka Dietrich)
