Prior to the forthcoming demo (this weekend) which will allow users to try out overlapping windows and menus, this is a video of the window manager on a 130XE:

Looks great!
It's very fast. Does it also run an Atari without VBXE?

Dear Jon!
Watching the thread on atariage since the beginning I must say that I am amazed about your drive and persistency in bringing the A8 into the next generation

.
From all the tries to bring a GUI to the A8 the only one ever useful (for a plain user like me) was S.A.M. from Binner & Schönfeld. It seems to be more than likely you will beat this.
Please, think about to participate in our Software Contest 2011.
Regards
Walter

The GUI does not require VBXE.

The demo will actually run on a stock 48K machine.
The software contest is an interesting proposition, but there will be many factors to consider when the GUI is complete. It is likely to require extended memory.

If you have a "small" version which runs on stock machines, just send them in for the software competition. And if the "full" release requires extensions, it will be a hot candidate for the ABBUC Awards.

A stock 130XE version is fine with the rules ->

Demos:
http://www.atari8.co.uk/downloads/guiST_011012.ziphttp://www.atari8.co.uk/downloads/guiAmi_011012.zipST and Amiga mouse flavours (port 2). Functionality is limited, but you can full / size / open / close windows and click desktop icons. File->Exit is functional, as is View->Text and View->Icons. Load address is only $1200, however, so you'll need to boot the XEX or use a DOS with a VERY low memlo.
Cartridge build to follow at length.
