Reimaged New XF551 Disk Drive PCB: eventueller Fehler
Hi,

8040 = 8040 und 8050 mit externem ROM

Hi,

Hi All,
Sorry for the English. I have been working on the XF551 V6 board without success. I have built two boards and both have been an issue. I was able to put in the wire to allow power but I now read the three transistors on the board are the wrong way around. I will fix that on my board.
Are there any other "mods" that need to be done to this board to make it work?
Thanks
macsonny (Australia)

Hi,
The FDC has multiple incorrect connections.
I'll post a summary in case I ever manage to get that thing run properly.

Reimaged New XF551 Disk Drive PCB: eventueller Fehler
Hi,
to sum up I found following bugs with the pcb "XF551_B v6.0 (c) 2023 Dropcheck":
1) Power not working
2) SIO not working
3) FDC not working correctly
4) Not writing to disk
5) The dots of the 7-segment display are always on
6) A problem with the 8040/8050 jumper
7) OS crashing when using EEPROMs larger than 2764
Below please find the solutions to the problems mentioned above:
1) There is a missing connection from AC power input to the bridge rectifier circuit. Solder a bridge like shown in the picture below.
2) The transistors Q1, Q2 and Q3 are incorrectly orientated. Turn the transistors by 180 degrees.
3) The FDC suffers from incorrect connections. At U2 cut the traces of PINs 3,4,5,6,7 and 8 (see picture, I used a high precision 1.4mm drill) and rewire the Pins:
(The trace for PIN7 is to be found on the pcb's lower side)
FDC PIN 3 (A0) -> 8040 PIN 27
FDC PIN 4 (A1) -> 8040 PIN 28
FDC PIN 5 -> 8040 PIN 12
FDC PIN 6 -> 8040 PIN 13
FDC PIN 7 -> 8040 PIN 14
FDC PIN 8 -> 8040 PIN 15
4) Q4 in write gate protection circuit incorrectly orientated. Turn Q4 by 180 degrees.
5) Should be off on side 0 and on on side 1. Maybe I killed my transistor T1, needs to be rechecked once I have a spare transistor.
6) Jumper needs to be put in contrary to what is printed on the CPU.
7) Open address line at PIN26 causes problems, so solder a bridge to PIN27.
I did a quck boot using the XF551 mechanics and it works.
I ran an extensive check using a 3.5" 80 track HD drive in DD mode using the Bob Wooley OS with my 80T mod formatting the disk, writing the LBA sector number to each sector and verifying the LBA number reading the disk again. The test ran successful.
Have fun

Can you show a picture of the traces you cut and the jumper wires installed?

Hi,
I'll try not to forget again to take one of the unpopulated pcbs with me so I can do a high dpi scan at work.
I don't think that a picture of the wires will help, but I'll do so.

four cut traces can already be seen on the bottom picture of my previous post.

Re: Reimaged New XF551 Disk Drive PCB: eventueller Fehler
Interesting when I went to look at cutting the tracks tonight my board looks a little different to your even though we are both rev 6?
It might be easier that I just lift the legs of the IC U2 and solder wires directly to the legs of U1 yes?
That means lifting legs U2-3,4,5,6,7 and 8 right?
U2-3 -> U1-12
U2-4 -> U1-13
U2-5 -> U1-14
U2-6 -> U1-15
U2-7 -> U1-16
U2-8 -> U1-17

Hi,
The WD1772-02 is hard to obtain and propably very expensive.
Despite this is the ugliest solution imaginable.
Feel free to post a picture of your pcb.

Photos of my board are attached including closeup of U2. See what you think?
Re: Reimaged New XF551 Disk Drive PCB: eventueller Fehler
Pulling the schematic (see attached extract) the pin joint between U2 and U1 doesn't seem to align with the schematic?

Hi,
yes, your pcb looks different, speak alone of U2-PIN3 ...
I suggest you get yourself the XF551 original schematics and check wiring against that.
I even took a sheet of paper and drew the 8040 and the WD1772 like they physically look and named the pins so it is much easier to find the pins named in the schematics on the real chip.
Furthermore it might be helpful to check the behaviour of the not-working pcb.
1) Is +5V and +12V power present
2) Does the 5V power go to all chips on the correct pins
3) Does it reply to SIO -> if no check the transistors' connections
4) Does it reply to SIO when the transistors are correct (it should)
5) Try to toogle between 8040/8050 setting
6) Check the ((E)E)PROM connections, too
and so on.
It is a tedious work, I know, but I cannot imagine a better procedure.

I haven't tried my board with the ROM's installed yet. Will try that later.
I'm not sure how we can have the exact same rev of board (v6.0_B) yet they are different boards!

Hi,
Yesterday I pulled T1 (that tiny little SMD transistor) off the board and measured it's pin assignment.
The pin assignment - guess what - does not match the pcb layout. The little beast is a PNP transistor and the pcb layout connects it:
+5V -> collector
/side -> emitter
LEDDOTS -> base
The correct assignment would be:
+5V -> emitter
/side -> base
LEDDOTS -> collector
I had to turn T1 like shown on the picture below and connect the base using a wire. Now the LED dots are on when side 1 is selected only.
Attached please find the gerbers that I guess were used to produce "my" pcb.
Btw, the LED track display will not fit in the XF551 top case front bezel. I guess it was designed to fit into a 3.5" drive adapter bezel.
CU, Erhard
modifying the printing according to the real version obviously had been forgotten.

I don't have posting access on ABBUC at the present time, or I would contact Erhard myself. If anyone can alert him to this post.

FDC PIN 3 (A0) -> 8040 PIN 27
FDC PIN 4 (A1) -> 8040 PIN 28
FDC PIN 5 -> 8040 PIN 12
FDC PIN 6 -> 8040 PIN 13
FDC PIN 7 -> 8040 PIN 14
FDC PIN 8 -> 8040 PIN 15

Reimaged New XF551 Disk Drive PCB: eventueller Fehler
Hi,
